Investigations Continue into Fentanyl on U.S. Naval Base

Multiple junior sailors have died due to the smuggled drug.

Investigators are trying to discover how fentanyl is being smuggled onto Naval Station Great Lakes, the U.S. Navy’s boot camp in Illinois. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) initiated at least five investigations into the mailing of “illicit/controlled substances” to servicemembers at Great Lakes in the latter part of 2020.

“Numerous service members have been interviewed and related the illicit substances were being sent via the US mail and/or in re-packaged food containers,” according to a December 2020 NCIS report. These substances included fentanyl, cocaine, opioids, hallucinogens, prescription drugs, and more.

This situation has led to questions about how young sailors within the Navy’s basic training and educational institutions at Great Lakes have been able to access and distribute drugs. Two sailors are facing charges related to one of the deaths.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Carlos Del Toro as he heads the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
  • For Navy investigators and boot camp leaders as they seek the source of illicit drug smuggling.
  • For junior sailors who are tempted to try drugs that could end their lives.
  • For the families of the sailors who have died due to fentanyl and other drugs.
